What is a data logger?

What is a data logger?

A data logger is an electronic instrument that takes measurements from sensors and stores those results for later use. Some commonly used measurements include temperature, pressure, current, velocity, tension, displacement, and several other physical quantities.

Steps to use the data logger:

1. Connect sensors to data loggers such as thermocouples, RTDs, thermistors, strain gauges and accelerometers;

2. Use the data logging software to configure your data logger;

3. Use the data logging software to configure your data logging task parameters such as sampling rate, early warning, start and stop conditions, etc.;

4. Run data logging tasks;

5. After the hardware digitizes your sensor measurements, analyze and store the data for later use.

Besides logging data, what can a data logger do?

From the name, the main purpose of the data logger is to store the data measured by the sensor for future use. But a data logging application usually requires more than just data collection and storage. You will inevitably need to analyze and represent data to understand measurements and make decisions based on recorded data. A complete data logging application generally requires most of the elements listed below.
